self

sometimes instead of crossing two different plants it is worth trying the same plant on itself. self. it tends to reinforce what ever qualities the plant has. and that can be risky if the plant has some weak traits. the parent plant is Vertical Horizon. and the seedling is below. the white petals are a nice change. and until it is crossed with another plant we will have to wait and see if this is a useful seedling.

It is all trial and error. Selfing can bring out good hidden traits if they are there. Likewise if they are there it can bring out hidden weakness. It is a risk that sometimes pays off. I don’t do it all the time.

The seedlings usually reshuffle the genes. Sometimes one parent is very dominant and visibly the F1 generation still looks like that parent. The reshuffling may not show until the next generation. And it is a game of cards. There is no sure thing on how all of the different traits will recombine. You have to wait and see.
