these are still pictures from last summer. so far this year’s daylilies are not ready to bloom. the daylilies are immune to my anticipation. knowing that bloom is slowly marching north is little consolation. pictures of bloom from texas and florida tease. pictures of new bloom scapes from the western part of ohio tell me to hope scapes will be here in my garden soon. eventually they will raise up above the foliage. i hope it gets here soon…
I don’t have to do any more stinking waiting.
But wait ! We have this lovely mood music while you wait. Our one trained gardener is busy out in the garden… and yes he is looking for scapes…
Throw in a magazine and you got a deal.
what is meant by “scapes” in this context? I love viewing the Daily-Lily. The other day I visited your link to “color theory” of daylilies…fascinating! I thought you had written that, its an interesting topic. My roses popped up next to the future-lilies, and a poppy also popped…tee hee…
Daylilies do not have stems. They have a fan of leaves originating from the growth point just above the roots. When it is time to bloom they send up a scape. There are no true leaves on the scape. Its sole purpose is for the blooms. Once the bloom seed cycle is done the scape shuts down and dies. Glad your garden is springing into bloom. Enjoy ! Thanks
ah ha! My entire body of knowledge about Daylilies stems from your blog, John. Thanks.
You are welcome !
I’m watching for scapes, now that I know what they are 😉
My daylilies are really crowded. I moved them from the septic tank spot about four years ago because I didn’t see them enough there. They like the nook by the front deck, but I think they need to spread out.
