step on

dirt.  we are not walking on sunshine or water.  we are in the garden in Xenia and moving down the rows of plants.  kind of mystical.  more kind of practical.  one step after another and one plant after another.  here are two siblings.  or so it would seem.  two different seeds from the same cross grown out.  some things are different.  and some are similar.  both have a purple eye pattern on a cream colored petal.  both have a dip in the top center of the eye pattern creating  a division in the shape of the pattern.  and if you look out to the edge of the petal you will see a little bit of color rising back up.  it gives the pattern another division, one at both edges of the petal.  it has probably happened before in other gardens.  it it just the first time i have seen a shape like this.  there are many things happening in the garden.  some that we may not have seen.  you, i, we just need to keep our eyes open.  four images…

older than dirt

and playing in the dirt.  the flower is Royal Ensign.  registered in 1951 it is older than me.  according to the AHS database there are no plants registered with Royal Ensign as a parent.  so is there something to be learned ?  what will Royal Ensign bring to its seedlings ?

this seedling is also from Irish Lullaby.  however the other parent is different.  this seedling is also from Katy’s Blue.  so it is similar.  and it is different.  two images

some daylilies have one set of petal one color and another set of petals another color.  usually it is obvious like one set white and the other pink or purple.  this one is not so obvious still it does the same thing.  one set of petals is a blue grey, the other a pink grey.  not a color combination one expects in the garden.  still it happens.  two images…

and more

is it okay to bringing in the grand parents ?   or is that going to far ?  i will not tell you how far some growers go back tracking parentage.  heck i might even be guilty, so i will not say it too loud.  this is a cross involving Asterisk x Walking the Pattern ( grand parents ) and left to right.  then Irish Lullaby x the seedling from Asterisk and Walking the Pattern.  again left to right.  and finally two images of the resulting seedling from that cross…  and if you get the chance share something with someone.  something nice…

a clue and a promise

this flower gives a clue.  One More Bud is the name.   and the promise is : if the garden conditions are right this flower will be a bud builder.  as long as conditions are favorable for growth and bloom this flower might continue to build more buds on the flower scape.  perhaps this year it will happen.  the plant has had three years to get well established in the garden.  three images…

different looks

some days daylilies have a slightly different look.  it can be the color for some.  temperature and weather can affect the color.  for others it can just be the the amount of straightness or curve.  this picture is of a curvier day and an older picture shows a straighter day.  Starman’s Voyage.

or shouldn’t.  did you ever do something that makes someone else ask why ?  scratch their head in wonder or dismay ?  well this is one of those crosses.  Nutmeg Elf is a small solid yellow flower.  Blue Lustre is larger purple full form flower.  and Radiation Biohazard is a big open star form.  put them all together in one cross and what do you get ?   Nutmeg Elf x(Blue Lustre x Radiation Biohazard.  something fairly different.  still a smallish flower.  three images…
