times 2

when you cross a seedling back to a sibling you gamble.  you can double up on good genetics.  you can also double up on so so and not so good genetics.  it is a risk.  this seedling is not the result of a sibling cross.  more like a cousin.  however there are genetic from Walking the Pattern on both sides.  the cross is Walking the Pattern x Asterisk) x ( Walking the Pattern x (Smoke Scream x Talon.  wherever the good genetics came from i do like the results.  three images…

unfolding

gardening is full of surprises.  some of them are very pleasant.  there is pollen and the pistil.  mythically speaking one would be the mixing container and the other the implement for stirring.  stir gently at times.  three images of a new seedling…

and more

is it okay to bringing in the grand parents ?   or is that going to far ?  i will not tell you how far some growers go back tracking parentage.  heck i might even be guilty, so i will not say it too loud.  this is a cross involving Asterisk x Walking the Pattern ( grand parents ) and left to right.  then Irish Lullaby x the seedling from Asterisk and Walking the Pattern.  again left to right.  and finally two images of the resulting seedling from that cross…  and if you get the chance share something with someone.  something nice…

a seedling from Irish Lullaby

This is a seedling from Irish Lullaby.  It is a first year bloom so it will take some time to see what it will look like when it is mature.  The look and color often will change a bit as the plant matures.  Irish Lullaby is a late blooming plant.  And seedlings are usually in a hurry their first year – so what it will do next year well I will just have to wait and find out.  The other half of the cross is a seedling from Asterisk and Walking the Pattern –  a pink open star shaped bloom.  This is what the seedling looks like a bi-tone.  It is pink petals with pale pink sepals, just a little bit different from both parents.

And now to wait for time to take its course.

known, known, think we know, surprise

yellow and white mixed together make pink don’t they ?  well this is daylilies not anything else.  today’s cross is Walking the Pattern x Asterisk.  if you poke around on Tinkers or the AHS databases you will see lavender and pink in the last couple of generations of Asterisk.  We already know from yesterday what Walking  the Pattern’s parents looks like.  so here are the two parents ..

and this is one of the seedlings they produced

10-051 Walking the Pattern x AsteriskI am still taking note because I have yet to figure this stuff out.   Yet I sure enjoy watching and observing as I learn.

whoda believed it

If someone told me a couple of my favorite hybridizers got together to make one of my favorite flowers I woulda said “duh !”   Yet that is exactly what happened.   One of the biggest proponents of tetraploid daylilies also worked in diploids during his early years.   And one of those flowers went into the creation of Asterisk.   So in a way Bill Munson had a hand in the creation of Asterisk and doing so was in a way a partner to John Lambert.   Myself, I have dreams of using Shibui Splendor with other daylilies and discovering new splendors.

SHIBUI SPLENDORIt is amazing to me that this flower is a recent parent to Asterisk.  Then again the genetics of daylilies are just that,  amazing !   Make it 25 blooms until spring.  Enjoy the splendor.  One last point, one “duh” is owed.   DUH !
