it just takes two

a very old flower – Autumn Minaret meets a fairly new flower Bark at Me.  it is the perfect flower.  define perfect.  seems there are lots of riders depending on who and when they define perfect.  i won’t kick it out of the garden here.   four images…  and oh the first flower is about 6 inches and the second one is half that size.   the seedling… it is the size of the bigger parent.

yellow

well there are other colors besides purple and lavender.  and there are other things in the genetics.  this seedling is a cross of Bark At Me and Autumn Minaret.  the first is medium height and a twisted flower.  the second is tall and yellow.  so the seedling is shorter than medium and has a twisted yellow flower.  four images and one of those is the parents…

extremes

Autumn Minaret is an old plant, from 1951.  it grows tall and it has small flowers at the end of the growing season.  Bark at Me is a fairly new plant.  it is of medium height and its flowers are twisty and large.  the seedling took the yellow and red color of Autumn Minaret.  it is a fairly short plant with a large twisty flower on the scale of Bark at Me.   three images…

expect the unexpected

this is day two of the cherished blogfest.  you can still join before the list closes.

if you wish to join or simply read other cherished blogs go to this link.  it is about cherished memories that are a key to our lives.  give it a try.

now back to the garden.  i recently found one of those seedlings that like to play peek-a-boo.  it has been suitably tagged and flagged.  nope i do not want to loose it again.  the cross is Trahlyta x Bark At Me.  the Bark At Me parentage would explain why it is a late season bloomer.  it just started blooming.  ( and there was great rejoicing ).  the pollen moved around the garden today too.  enough of the yacking, time for some blooming image.  three images…  oh did i mention that sometimes this flower can be twisted too ?   i think that might come from Bark At Me too.  the other two blooms on this plant today were not twisted !

similar

and different again.  another cross with Irish Lullaby.    Irish Lullaby x ((Bark at Me x Black Plush) x Grey Witch) and it goes in different direction.  Still some flow and movement to the petals.  Just a much wider, larger, darker flower.  two images

combinations

gardening can be a what if experience.  what if these two flowers are brought together ?  i wonder if that question is part of the dance those bees do before they leave the hive or fly to the next flower ?   three images.  the parents Black Plush crossed with Bark at Me.  and the results a flower know as Dark Counterpoint.

somethings remembered

or parts of somethings are remembered.  the cross is known – Bark at Me x Autumn Minaret.   it is much shorter than either of its parents, less than half as tall.  it has the yellow and red color of Autumn Minaret and the longer petals of Bark at Me.  And unlike Autumn Minaret the bloom is not so much of a trumpet shape.  now if i could just remember to put it in a spot where it is not so crowded and remember to cross it back to its taller sibling.  two images…

Primary color

on this pallet this flower is a primary color.  Bark At Me is a taller plant.  it is listed at 36 inches 91cm.  for me it has been growing closer to 48 inches.  it was planted in the back row next to the fence, way too far to reach for pictures or pollen.  so last fall it was moved up where it could be used.  this plant needs to be crossed.  it is too pretty to just sit there.  the 7.5 inch 19cm flower redefines its form every day.  and each day it is commanding.  Bark At Me  two images

behind the face

often i look at a plant and wonder what is behind that face.  two plants can look so similar on the surface, yet the next generation of each of them can go in completely different directions.  knowing the genetics of the parents can lend a clue.  and at the same time that knowledge does not reveal the genetic diversity that can spring out in the coming generation.   so looking at what appears to be a familiar face does not mean the flower is going to travel down a familiar road.  the notes on this seedling are sparse.  the description of the image was posted from memory.  the face supports some of that memory.  and the knowledge that another seedling with that cross traveled in another direction.  what path awaits this seedling.  Bark At Me x Black Plush.
