red

simple keep it. and leave yoda out of this too. this flower is usually tall about 40 inches 101.6 cm. and it blooms late in the last third of daylily season. it may have had a not happy with this summer reaction. i seem to remember it not reaching its normal height. something to watch in the plant evaluation.

enthusiasm

“success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” winston churchill

that can be applied to many situations. daylilies is one of them. a flower can possess many qualities. when you put two flowers together you never know which qualities will be passed to the offspring. you can guess. and in time you can find the qualities that were unexpectedly dropped. Golliwog is a gorgeous flower. except that it is pollen sterile. frustrating still not the end of the world or the end of the garden. it does limit some options on that next cross. Mahukona is a child plant from Golliwog. i need to look into that some more and perhaps plan a few crosses with both of those flowers. sometimes some limits are not so bad. just add enthusiasm…

notorious seedlings

whoda thunk it ? a flower seedling with a notorious reputation. and all because the parent plant had something of an unusual name. i guess that describes the world of daylilies. if you grow a daylily from seed and if you decide to register it you can name it pretty much what you want. within reason. or within stretching reason. or you can try to make the registration body balk and hesitate. one of the daylilies that grows in my garden is named Naked X-ray Technician. when you consider x-rays it takes on what i would consider a poetic nature. now that i am half way into this post i do want to thank dan for the inspiration for tonight’s post. someone else named this daylily. and like i said poetically speaking i find the name amusing and thought provoking. it may even cause me to ponder the potential name of the seedling that surprised dan with its parentage. that is if the seedling itself is a plant worthy of registration. it certainly has a different look. and it needs to have more than a look. it needs to be a healthy strong plant that is more than a flash be it in the sunshine or the blast of an x-ray. that will take several years of evaluation. the plant will have to weather the test and be tested by the weather – or climate. anyway here are the pictures of the parents and a reprise by the seedling that started the ruckus. first the parents. Naked X-ray Technician is the flower on the right. the seedling follows. if i could manage to persuade it to put its lab coat back on the resemblance to its parents would immediately become obvious… thanks dan !

where was i ?

oh yes the flower that got pushed back gets to give some push back. this yellow flower bloomed this summer. it is like all seedlings a little bit of this and a little bit of that. the cross reads 16-121 10-069 Desert Icicle x Autumn Minaret) x 12-0619-006 Open Hearth x Kindly Light #2 UF. Desert Icicle a unusual form a very blush pink. Autumn Minaret is a tall plant with a small yellow trumpet shaped flower, Open Hearth is red and yellow beacon of a flower. and Kindly Light is a glowing yellow skinny string bean. when they are all put together there are no frankenstein bolts. there are bits and pieces from each parent. somehow the color comes back to a clear strong yellow. not quite as big and not quite as skinny as Kindly Light. yet the plant itself might be a few inches taller. and i think better branching. time will tell about its other qualities…

half

about half of the 46 plants that need to be moved have been moved. the quadrant of garden bed is becoming less empty. and the gardener, digger, mover is moving at his slow pace. maybe even a steady pace. i need to look at the list of plants to move and decide which ones should be in this bed. and which ones can go elsewhere in the garden.

… oh and when wp refuses to publish and generated screwy error messages go check it might just be published… grrr

today

today i worked on the part that i avoided writing about yesterday. sometimes referred to as the extended review bed. call it phase two. call it next. call it time to empty it out too. that circular bed that shows up in some of the yard images has about a 6 foot center with walk ways around it forming four semi circle quadrants. overall it is a 24 foot 7,3 meter bed. three of those quadrants are extended review beds. each year one of those beds gets emptied so the flagged seedlings have a place to go. i think i kept the moves to one plant out one plant in. though i was tempted to do a few more complicated moves. one plant was about to move until i realized there were three seed pods still ripening. moving and seed pods gets awkward and dangerous. it will get a few days of reprieve… please ignore the white crunchy water. it will be quite a while until the snow flies. it does however give a clear picture of the garden layout. and the flower is from the beginning of this summer.

lists and moves

there are about a hundred plants in the seedling beds that are flagged to be saved. that is more than usual. part of that is a good thing. lots of choices. part of it is a more difficult thing. it might be too many choices. there are three beds of flagged seedlings. only two of the beds need to be cleared for next spring’s planting. the other bed can wait for a year. which will put the number of moves closer to 66. closer except some of the move now plants are in that third bed. all of the seedlings are on a list. the must moves are sorting their way to the top. and the spaces needed are being counted. the creating the needed spaces in the rest of the garden will be the really fun part. most of the plants will be re-evaluated. and the shuffling for spots with better lighting will get in the way. instead of being a two plant move some moves may turn into thee and four plant moves. if the garden was all full sun it would be simple. not. eventually things will sort themselves out. there may be some grumbling, some regrets, and more moves than i want. kinda like last year. and like what will happen next year. marginally controlled chaos. then again it is part of the game. seeing new seedlings each year means making room and reorganizing each year. the moves have started. six moves down. and about 80 to go if one counts optimistically. here is one from the list… somewhere…

the camera does not lie

however i suspect it does have a wicked sense of humor. both images are from my galaxy 7 cell phone. first is just point and shoot. second is clicking on part of the image – the flower – and then shooting. no doubt there is a simple explanation. one that simply will be left to another night when when i have more time and greater curiosity, or did those giggling garden sprites get into my camera !

one more tag

the garden sprites giggled and said i forgot one. they giggled so right. this one now has a tag. and even though the sprites were happy they still giggled. they will be giggling still when i try to find room to put this one from the seedling bed elsewhere in the garden. giggles…

orange tag trouble

what was i thinking ? those orange tags mean find a place for me when you empty the seedling bed. news flash planting day in the meadow is going to look like a walk in the park when all this dust settles. oh the fun we will have…
