wet snow

just above freezing with rain all day.  the wet snow was a bonus.  if you want to call it a bonus.  and to think winter does not really start for another month.  time to catch up on my reading.  now for some pictures from last summer…

not quite like the river

there is a saying that you cannot stand in the same river twice.  the river has changed.  somehow they neglect to mention that you and i change too between visits to the river.  gardens sometimes are slower to change.  i am not sure if it really slows those changes to you and me.  or if the memories we bring to the garden are slower to change.  while i am here i will enjoy the memories.  bask in that soft morning sun.  revel in the play of light.  watch the dew slip away.  and hope that the guy with botanical musical chairs has not wreaked too much havoc.

planning and adjustment and more adjustment is a close description.  it is fairly accurate and gives a sense of the situation.  i will skip some of the details for the sake of keeping to the point.  i won’t talk about tetraploid crosses.  those that have twice as many sets of chromosomes.  and i won’t talk about the multiple factors that can keep me from making some crosses.  i will just talk about the flowers from tonight and one flower from last night.  the flower from last night is one that i would like to cross with each of the flowers from tonight.  it is tall and red and spidery.  most of the flowers from tonight are similar in one or more ways.  the exception is the apricot colored flower tonight.  the reason for all of the crosses is to see what happens in the next generation.  some of these crosses will happen.  some will refuse to happen because the genetics will be incompatible.  some will refuse to happen this coming year and might happen the following year.  then again that is only if i remember the following year.  or if i don’t come across a much more fascinating cross.  and then there is musical chairs in the garden.  each year spring and fall the music plays and each plant needs to find a chair before the music stops.  and of course each year i keep changing the music as my fascination wanders the garden.

steps

each day’s pictures are stored in daily folders.  and the order of those pictures pretty much tell my steps through the garden.  most days the steps are orderly.  other days the steps run all over the garden depending on the latest fascinations.  the steps on this day were mostly orderly.  and most of the flowers are on the skinny side.  the fascinating flower this summer was Rainbow Maker.  it is a pink flower with a big eyezone that can vary day to day between lavender and blue.  is it my only favorite ?  no and please make sure you have an hour to spare if you ask me.  and you can choose your own most fascinating flower because finding out what someone else enjoys is just as much fun…

clean up n snow

today some of the daylily leaves were trimmed and went to the compost pile.  the yard is mostly done.  and the plants that were not cleaned up will mostly stay until next spring.  tomorrow morning there are winter storm warnings.  cold and yucky with little accumulation.  or so they say.  so until then we might as well go back to 6 of july and see what was blooming.

5 to 6

that is going from july 5 to 6.  the rained on flower is from 5.  maybe if i insert the flower pictures now i can figure out what to say.  or i could remain mostly befuddled.  befuddled now there is a word.  i might look up its origins latter.  after i get done staring at the flowers.  that is if i remember what i was doing before the flowers got my attention.  and to think they mostly move slower than turtles.  and i end up not moving mush more while i look.  until it is time to move on to the next flower.

 

still lost

the garden image has me lost again.  it is intoxicating all on its own.  now where was i ?  who cares ?  i could just sit here with this intoxicating view…

some days and some nights i can just get delightfully lost in the garden.  whether it is the actual garden or the digital photo folder.  positively delightfully lost…

freeze

last night there was a hard freeze.  the annual plants are done.  the perennials will be back next spring.  for now they too are done.  i emptied a few of the pots with dry dirt in them.  the dirt went on top of the compost pile.  the pots will be stored in the garage.  the pots with damp dirt, well they were frozen and will have to wait for a warmer day.  now some flowers from back in july…

the last of the seeds have been harvested.  put away in an envelope until spring.  then they will go in the ground.  and it will begin again.  until then more pictures from last summer…
