blog now

or drift off to sleep.  okay so the cherished blog fest is fested for another year.  it was fun and now it is time for another picture.  why ?   the daylilies still bloom.  the hour glass of daylily season is running down.  so the bloom in the yard will get sparser and sparser.  in the mean time i might just enjoy the remaining, unfolding, and opening flowers one day at a time.  this is a seedling of Pygmy Plum x Flying Carpet ) x Poultry In Motion.  it is drifting in one of my favorite directions – a nice open star form.  and that is enough yacking.  let’s switch to looking instead.  three images…

Flying Carpet

i have talked about the crosses that came from this flower, both others and my own.    Flying Carpet is an interesting flower.  if you go by the name it would suggest magical.  and while we are on the topic of things difficult to explain we will include a flower blooming in the yard now, Eastern Redbud.  there are not many flowers that bloom directly from the trunk or a main branch.  most require a twig, except for redbud.  four images…

stretch…

…ing.   would that be me or the flower?   or both?   anytime a tetraploid daylily gets somewhat skinny it is worth the stretch.   a cross of Flying Carpet x Pygmy Pirate) x Heavenly Fire

not a summer snowflake

sometimes wandering the picture folders is almost as surprising as wandering the garden when new things are blooming.  oh i like this one and that one and that one.   and it becomes very difficult to hold them all.  perhaps you will enjoy holding this one for a moment or two.  two images a couple days apart.  the same flower with a bit of a different look.  the second image has a bit of sculptural shaping going on.  the petal is folded so all that is visible is the midrib.  enjoy.  and at this time of year i don’t think the request to compare it to anything except a snowflake is the least bit unusual…

A granddaughter and Flying Carpet

This is about another seedling out of Flying Carpet.  And it is about the fun that can be had with daylilies.  When you grow your own plants you also can choose to name a plant and what or who that name reflects.   In this case we had several possible plants and my wife and daughter had picked out names for each plant chosen by our granddaughters.  This first one is the plant chosen by our eldest granddaughter Arianna.  It also happens to have Flying Carpet as one of the parents.  It was selected by Arianna and her preference was a purple flower.  This is Arianna’s Aria.

arianna's ariaMake it just 2 hours short of 29 flowers until spring.  And make if purple.

extending the dream

Six of the daylilies that have Flying Carpet listed as a parent grow here.  Tyrolean Treasure is a bi-tone.  Two different colors – three dark petals in front and three light cream colored sepals contrasting behind the petals.  Similar to Old King Cole mentioned here a few days back.  Yet the cream colored sepals make for a marked contrast to the purple petals.  Both flowers share Flying Carpet as direct parent.

a daylily for dreaming

and for reality.  Flying Carpet is a daylily for both.  It is a pretty daylily that I can sit back and dream what this flower can do in the garden.  And it is a practical daylily that people have crossed with other daylilies creating more and varied daylilies for the garden.  There are 26 daylilies that have been registered so far having Flying Carpet as a parent.  Links below.

So take a little dream and ride on a Flying Carpet.  Make it 33 blooms until spring.
