not too orange

two orange.  one tetraploid – 44 chromosome – orange.  and another diploid – 22 chromosome orange.  the first is a cross of South Seas x Highland Pinched Fingers and it is tetraploid.  the second is a cross of Black Plush and Trahlyta and it is diploid.  tetraploid plants have twice as many chromosomes.  this means the plants can have twice as many genes controlling a plant behavior.  generally this results in a heavier, stronger plant.  as in everything else the increased count results in tradeoffs.  six images…

KITCS syndrome

that would be Kid in the candy store.  you might have seen me post ‘find a picture’.   some days are easier than others.  oh that one is nice and that other one will be tomorrow.  except tomorrow the other one is another other one.  or should it be this one ?   was yesterday’s flower red ?  what color should we do today ?  oh no – look that one !   and so it goes.  it is not easy to wander into the candy store each day.   do find a picture.  please.  for today some parents and a seedling.  and the parents are seedlings too…  three images…   the cross is Turn Back Time X Coburg Preview) x (Highland Pinched Fingers x South Seas )    and   seedling x tet Skinwalker right to left.  their seedling is below…

first is a couple of parent flowers that went into a cross.  and second two of the seedlings from the cross.   the parents are John Karl Seager x  (South Seas x Highland Pinched Fingers) right to left.  and second there are two seedlings from that cross.  the parents are two different colors, lavender and orange.  the seedlings start to go their own ways.  similar, yet different.   three images…

and

find the picture…. and …  well after the picture it varies.  once the picture is found there is a flower to share.   the simple part of the ‘and’ is not to get in the way of the flower.  or try not to get in the way.  the flower has more to tell, believe it or not.  so what are tonight’s few words ?  they are about a seedling.  most seedlings are what could be called first steps.  rare is the seedling that exceeds both parent plants.  it is the first step of what might be two or more crosses that just might lead to something that will stop you in your tracks.  so while many crosses are pretty they are not that elusive show stopper.  so before the words do get in the way here is a seedling.  a sibling cross that is looking for that next step…  two images and part of the previous step

perfect picture

well maybe for this story.  and perhaps not for another.  first imagine a smallish adult hand.  not smallish in adult size, more likely about average.  just smallish compared to the flower.  imagine the fingers splayed wide and not quite covering the bloom.  in fact turn things around and the hand might hide easily behind the bloom.  two pictures and one much favored seedling  12-0623-002 Highland Pinched Fingers x Coberg Preview ) x Websters Pink Wonder …

seedlings bloom

this is a seedling.  one that is doing what i most enjoy seeing.  an open star shaped form.  petals that are longer and narrow.  petals with a bit of a pinch.  now the questions comes – given some time to recover from transplant how tall will these flowers grow ?  two images..

too many details ?

some seedlings carry a long list of names to show where or more properly what they have been.  their parentage.  while this seedling has a long enough list there are others with a far longer list.  some daylily growers do like to keep track of their seedlings and parent histories as far back as they can manage.  the cross of this seedling is 11-047 Highland Pinched Fingers x South Seas) x (Highland Pinched Fingers x Monster.  and yes Highland Pinched Fingers is this cross twice.  so much for details, let’s go to the picture where a picture can do what a thousand words sometimes cannot.

a red seedling

This is one of the exciting seedlings from last summer.  I posted about it back last August.  Perhaps tonight I can give you a better idea why this one is fascinating.  The two parents are both spidery open star shaped flowers.  And this seedling seems to have picked up on those qualities.  For a surprise yellow plus orange has given a nice red flower in the seedling.  And it has decent height so far, about 34 inches ( 86cm).   All in all not bad for a first year bloom.   So now the pictures, first the parents – both seedlings themselves, next the seedling, and finally a close up of a petal.  Enjoy.  Oh and don’t try this mix with crayons or other pigments.  Orange and yellow don’t often spin off this surprise red.

a seedling

This is a first year bloom seedling from this past summer.  The loose translation, it might just get better as it matures.  And right now it is not so bad just as it is.   The sepals are long and skinny.  And the front petals are showing enough pinch and length to make them interesting.  The cross is 12-028 ((11-003 Turn Back Time X Coburg Preview) x (Highland Pinched Fingers x South Seas )) x (SH B110-A tet Skinwalker)  Yes it is a long list of plants.  And sometimes it is good to know the plants involved in a cross.  And to build on that bit of knowledge.  For now enough details,  the seedling.

the wizard’s seedling

This is one of my seedlings.  And no I am not a wizard.  One of the parents of this seedling is a  plant named Wisest of Wizards.  The full cross is 12-154 Wisest of Wizards x ((11-004 Highland Pinched Fingers x Coburg Preview) x Websters Pink Wonder)   Perhaps the next cross will stretch this one back out into a longer spidery flower.  Perhaps, that is what keeps this interesting.  That and the pretty flowers that show up while dreaming about the next perhaps.
