return of the elf

moving plants holds all kinds of surprises.  sometimes a plant will not take well to its new location.  and you end up moving it again.  Nutmeg Elf got moved under the tree in the front garden.  there were other daylilies there along side it.  they bloomed.  Nutmeg Elf grooved its inner elfness and expressed its displeasure.  it did not bloom.  so it was moved to a sunnier spot in the front gardens.  now it is happier.  this is the first day of bloom.  it is very happy.  always try to keep your elves happy…

variety

some flowers are big.  some are not.  some flowers have a strong clear color.  some do not.  some might say i am trying to set the stage for big flowers with a strong clear color.  i am not.  there is room for both.  there is room for a multitude of variety.  some of this variety has yet to be encountered.  and when we do encounter it we will struggle for words to describe it.  tonight’s flower is small.  its color is bi-tone.  the petals are a reddish color and the sepals behind them are yellowish.  and i say reddish because the color is mottled.  it is not a solid red.  it is uneven and varied.  the cross would not lead you to expect this result.  it is from Nutmeg Elf a small solid yellow and Rococo another small size yellow.  and there are all sorts of seedlings similar to this that other hybridizers are working to get mottled, freckled, speckled, streaked, and other variations of uneven unsymmetrical random color patterns.  the face of the daylily keeps changing.  three images…

beauty for a day

from the Greek Hemerocallis.  and just for a day.  then the flower fades into a dripping mess and quickly dries to a wisp.  moving yesterday’s flower left the ‘ink’ you see on my hand.  and there is little question to the size of this little beauty.  a cross of Nutmeg Elf x (Blue Lustre x Radiation Biohazard.  a strange combination that seems to have worked out just fine.  once it is moved from the relative shade of the seedling bed it too will play just fine in the sun.  three images…

should

or shouldn’t.  did you ever do something that makes someone else ask why ?  scratch their head in wonder or dismay ?  well this is one of those crosses.  Nutmeg Elf is a small solid yellow flower.  Blue Lustre is larger purple full form flower.  and Radiation Biohazard is a big open star form.  put them all together in one cross and what do you get ?   Nutmeg Elf x(Blue Lustre x Radiation Biohazard.  something fairly different.  still a smallish flower.  three images…

mapping the puzzle

if the garden is the puzzle then each flower each picture becomes a piece of the puzzle.  pretty much each day it is walk, stop, snap a picture, and repeat until all the flowers are pictured, the rain comes, or darkness falls.  and some days if the walk is consistent the flower next to a mystery bloom becomes my note.  it might not be much, still it is enough to place a bloom in one section or another of the garden.  and when the garden label is in sight so much the better. Nutmeg Elf x ( Little Rainbow x Talon) a small flower in the 4 in 10.6 cm range.   oh, and yesterday’s flower is just a step away.  four images

wordless for how long ?

it seems the end of summer has finally come.  autumn is here.  i think the daylilies could manage wordless all week long straight through until spring.  though i don’t know if i could resist at least a few comments until then.  maybe even several more.  and a gratuitous pun here and there.  that would be the really difficult part.  and that approach has been totally ruined for tonight.  fortunately the daylilies are unperturbed by that fact.  please note the staid composure.   a Nutmeg Elf seedling… two images

elf in the garden

this is about a little flower – Nutmeg Elf.  it is little.  it is old.  and it has not lost its pretty.   then again neither elves or daylilies ever do.  even if some people’s tastes change.   it is also a spider.  that is a daylily with skinny petals.  so yes its pollen has made its way around the garden too.  the flower is 3 inches  7.8 cm across.  and it quickly grows into an attractive clump.  lots of pretty delicate flowers.  two images   and yes there are seedlings if you would search
