share a flower

there are a lot of days to get through winter.  and quite a few more before the daylilies bloom again as spring comes to an end.  until then as long as the pictures hold out we can share a flower.  five images…

another old cross

this is 14-097 Ice Carnival  x Open Hearth.  another seedling from two older parents.  similar to the cross two nights ago.  yet different.  Open Hearth was in both.  this one includes Ice Carnival.  i hope that both of these seedlings hold new surprises in the next generation.  three images…

dreams and then there are dreams

dreams are not really supposed to make sense.  so this should be about as close as i need to worry.  this seedling is a cross of Open Hearth and Ice Carnival – both of which were converted to the tetraploid versions.  yes they have twice as many chromosomes.  it is one of those crosses i have been wanting to make.  so now that it is made where shall it go ?  time will tell.  and hopefully we shall enjoy.  four images including the parents…

a seedling

this is one of many seedlings planted in 2012.   some bloomed in 2013.  more bloomed in 2014.  this one is from Open Hearth heritage.  it has the colors of Open Heath and the petals have gone much skinnier.  which is what i was hoping.  this spring like most springs the challenge is to select the plants with the most promise to move out of the seedling bed and to the observation bed.  and not put too many too close together.  they do need a bit of room to bloom.

in the picture

you have to get out into the garden to get into the picture.  even if like now it is several months later.  yes it is a bit of chaos out there.  it is hidden sometimes by editing.  i was going to say careful editing, then decided that it was to limiting. to anti-chaos.  and sometimes we need to acknowledge the chaos.  and live with it.  not deny it.  not sugar coat it.  and not try to hide it.  so now on to the chaos of the flower.  one of mine.  named even.  named with help from a gardening friend.  Rainbow Afterglow from a big flower – Open Hearth and a little flower – Little Rainbow.  from old chaos comes new chaos.  four images  – sometimes the focus changes and we still need to look…

Open Hearth

a flower and its seedling.  this flower is a full bodied bloom.  the petals are full and oval shaped.  can the flower be changed in the next generation ?  the obvious answer is yes.  the question is which direction or directions am i trying to take this flower.  sometimes it can be simple and the results can be direct and fulfilling.  there is no guarantee for such quick results.  So here is a picture of Open Hearth and a link to the other parent Kindly Light.  the simplest description for Kindly Light is a skinny yellow star.  put the two together and what will the new answer be ?  the mathematical answer is on a cosmic scale.  the number of stars begins to define the genetic possibilities.  the way over simplified answer is to put the two parents at opposite ends and put as many composites and permutations as you can imagine between them.  it is a start, oversimplified, still it is a start at realizing the possibilities.  so first Open Hearth and second it skinny seedling.. three images.  enjoy

spiders

this flower fits the spider description.  long skinny petals.  it blooms like this all the time.  a star shape – straight – no twists.  the cross is Open Hearth x Kindly Light.  the color pattern of Open Hearth melded to the form of Kindly Light. what is not to like ?  enjoy  three images

one more Trahlyta seedling

this is Trahlyta crossed with two other plants.  Trahlyta was first crossed with Open Hearth resulting in a very purple seedling.  and that seedling was then crossed with Walking the Pattern which is a very red seedling.  here is the final result.  or perhaps i should not say final result as this one will no doubt be crossed with something too.

one day

one day.  one flower.  sometimes simplicity is just enough.  just enough of a formula to make way to the following day.  so today a simple flower.  perhaps the complicated eye looks for more.  and the simple eye sees enough.  one flower.

a glow for the garden

cross a skinny one with a full bodied one.   repeat again with two different flowers.  now take those two and cross them to each other.  this is what you get.
