first flower

something about the seedling bed is magical. something about not knowing exactly what mother nature is going to do. it is kind of like taking a kid into a candy store and letting them pick anything they like. yes like that. except adult kids are susceptible to other forms of sugar. still they really think that ‘sugar’ is sweeeeeet ! so i calmly ran to the seedling bed to find out what happened this morning. mother nature said in her best stage whisper ” let’s see what this one does…” it was not the tallest flower. and it was not the biggest flower. however it was one of the deepest shades of purple my eyes has ever seen. yes the kid has been in the candy shop again…

this one was selfed. take the pollen and put it on the pistil of the same flower. in this case the result is a little smaller yet still very pretty…

another Ida Mae Norris seedling. except for height wise i am not sure about the other elements…

this seedling is a combination of Ida Mae Norris and Blue Lustre. and it is a little bit like each parent. both are midseason bloomers. they all just started blooming now. and that would include the seedling. they are all a similar height. there is a bit of variation in the flower shape and size. now to watch it mature and to count the ruffles…

the flowers they do not read. they know no rules. people on the other hand make too many rules. the flower should do this. the flower should do that. instead only this hold the flower up. if it brings you happiness plant as many as you can. share them with anyone who expresses happiness with the flower…

old and new

this seedling has one relatively old parent and one that is new. one parent is from 2014. the other is from 1955. unless you consider the genetics really never get old. at which point the new and old both become somewhat meaningless…

why ?

why are all the daylilies on the compost pile ? well not all the daylilies are on the compost pile. however a lot of daylilies are there. all of the old spent blooms and everything that was blooming friday are on the compost pile. why ? because tomorrow morning the garden will all be fresh blooms that opened overnight. no spent blooms from today. clean clean clean pretty blooms and nothing else. the garden will be ready for garden walk. and my hands will not, repeat not have a ton of fresh daylily ink on them. bring on the garden walk…
