not. nature prefers a bit of stubbornness on most occasions. you will see parts of your hopes. and other parts will be missing. both are late flowers. one is a seedling from Adeline Goldner. it is more open and star shaped. the other, Sky Captain is rounder and taller and pinker. and the seedling is somewhere in the middle. it requires more imagination and some pollen to match. can i find either ? after all the garden is as much reality as it is a place of dreams. four images…

rocks and air
one comes from close to the ground – Philosopher’s Stone. A solid yellow and round flower. the other comes from the air – Sky Captain. A mostly rounded pinkish flower that is into edges. two seeds were planted in that hole. they must have looked weak for some reason. well both germinated. one bloomed last year and this one was an unexpected surprise. not as tall as Sky Captain. and nowhere like the solid yellow of Philosopher’s Stone. three images…
in those genes
what do you get when you cross toothy with big and tall ? pleasant surprises. the cross is Ruffled Strawberry Parfait x Sky Captain. a polychrome cream with a peach blush with i think a slightly bigger flower. and while it is not as tall as one parent it is also not as short as the other. i am going to sit back and enjoy this one. three images…
a ruffled start
this is a first year bloom from a cross of Philosopher’s Stone and Sky Captain. it bloomed pretty enough. the questions – a few of them – how will it behave in the coming year ? will the plant be short or tall ? will the ruffles maintain their current casual free form spacing and sizes ? i guess i will something else to watch this next summer. three images…
abc
these are the three siblings. they are from the same cross. seeds out of the same pod. similar in many ways and unique in other ways. last year they all bloomed about the same time. this year like many other plants they bloomed on separate schedules. red first, poly chrome yellow and peach came second. and when the other two were mostly done then the orange started blooming. the red is shorter. the other two about the same height. and in terms of growth the orange increased the most. it has the most fans ( dividable plant sections) and it put up the most bloom scapes. so here they are 13-011 (12-0727-003 Monster x Lavender Branch) x Sky Captain plants a, b, and c. three images…
not so
not so late. and not so tired. gee i might even spell tired and tireder right tonight. or not if poetic license abounds. so can we get back to the flower and its parents ? the cross is 13-011-A 12-0727-003 Monster x Lavender Branch) x Sky Captain. so one parent is a seedling Monster crossed with another seedling that had the garden name of Lavender Branch. the other parent is Sky Captain. they look like this
and here is another image of last nights flower. this one is numbered 13-011-A. the A is a notation that there are siblings, in this case B an C. more about those tomorrow. three more images…
orange seedling
always
plantings seeds. it is always an exercise in hope. hope for something a little different. hope for something a little better. hope for the future. must be why it is called growing. this is a different seedling from the one last night. and it is a similar seedling. both have Sky Captain as one parent. tonight the other parent is Apatosaurus. four images…
poly and pink
this started blooming today. it has pink sepals. and the petals are what is called polychrome a blending of pink and yellow. throw in a few toothy edges. the cross is Ruffled Strawberry Parfait x Sky Captain. now will it grow tall like Sky Captain ? i won’t even try to guess until it comes out of the seedling bed. so many things are at half height from this year of sparse rain. three images…
large
large flower, large plant. this is a seedling from Sky Captain. it grows about 40 inches 101.6 cm tall and has about a 7 inch 17.8 cm flower. it is a subtle blend of yellow and pink shades. it is the second year of bloom for this seedling. four images…
