blush and glow

how could such a simple color pattern be so exciting ?   a dash of yellow and a blush of pink.  just a hint of glow.  it works. now to mix it with that next cross.  three images…

when you cross a seedling back to a sibling you gamble.  you can double up on good genetics.  you can also double up on so so and not so good genetics.  it is a risk.  this seedling is not the result of a sibling cross.  more like a cousin.  however there are genetic from Walking the Pattern on both sides.  the cross is Walking the Pattern x Asterisk) x ( Walking the Pattern x (Smoke Scream x Talon.  wherever the good genetics came from i do like the results.  three images…

focus on the petals might be another way of saying nearly wordless.  though the last time i tried wordless it ended up being more title-less.  so tonight we will throw in a few petal describing words.  like the parents, an unidentified plant and Orchid Corsage.  and the seedling, later named Walking the Pattern.  and picture of its branching.  enough words.  four images…

 

plain yellow excitement

another seedling.  yellow.  just yellow.  for the color that is.  it was moved to the observation bed this past summer.   this summer we should answer the question if the flower scape will come back as strong as it was in the seedling bed.  we already know it has fairly good branching and bud count.  and we shall see what it does crossing to other flowers.  perhaps we will start with the seedling from yesterday’s post.  or something else.  three images…

is it okay to bringing in the grand parents ?   or is that going to far ?  i will not tell you how far some growers go back tracking parentage.  heck i might even be guilty, so i will not say it too loud.  this is a cross involving Asterisk x Walking the Pattern ( grand parents ) and left to right.  then Irish Lullaby x the seedling from Asterisk and Walking the Pattern.  again left to right.  and finally two images of the resulting seedling from that cross…  and if you get the chance share something with someone.  something nice…

some purple

this seedling has been here a while.  it is tall in the the 60 in 152 cm range.   it is a cross of Starman’s Quest and Walking the Pattern.  the question still remains – how will it mature ?  three images…

not the purple seedling

this is a seedling.  a sibling of a purple seedling.  most often a brown seedling is not considered a choice to make.  perhaps not a choice over a purple sibling.  just a choice along side a purple sibling.  sometimes we just have to watch the unexpected and see what might come of it.  a brown seedling where no brown seedling was expected.  indeed a seedling where no purple seedling was expected.  12-140 Golliwog x Walking the Pattern a yellow flower crossed with a yellow pink poly chrome flower.  one purple seedling and one brown seedling.  where will they go ?  two images

 

peaches and banana

why not ?  it is a bit different from peaches and cream.  this flower is what is known as a bi-tone petals one color and sepals another.  it is also a late season bloomer.  it is this second year of bloom.  and it is tall, somewhere between 4 and 5 feet 1.2 – 1.5 m.  i think it just made the selection list for the year.  it is a cross of Irish Lullaby and a seedling from Asterisk x Walking the Pattern.  two images

 

tight

that is a word describing the motion of this flower.  the tips of the sepals curl into tight little end points.  the sepals themselves curl into small tubes.  and these tight little curls cap them off.  they are a contrast to the open spoon shaped petals.  large and small side by side on the same flower.  the usual disk shape defined by the flat laid back petals is accented by three bolts of energy  radiating out from the center of the flower.  enjoy
