it does not stop

each year brings new excitements.  it might only be a slight improvement.  still it is better than it was.  the flower is a little bigger.  the plant is a little taller.  it is a solid red.  it is bud building.  that means as long as it is warm, there is enough rain, and the plant has enough nutrients that new buds form and bloom is extended.  and this is enough to be a good thing.  three images…

hello…

as in hello where did you come from ?  this seedling surprised me.  large – like somewhere in the 10 inch 25.4 cm dinner plate size flower.  hello.  so what is the cross ?   Smoke Scream x Cerulean Star) x Black Plush x Trahlyta) x Wind Frills.  hello !  that is just a couple of my old seedlings.  so now i am properly confused.  big,  pinchy twisty red lavender with a gray blueish purple eye, and a huge yellow throat.  hello !  are you starting to get the idea i was surprised ?  well i am still starting to get the idea.  and i am starting to like it.  honey i am going out to play in the garden.  i will probably be back in when it gets dark.  you just can’t hold it.  it only last one day and it disappears.  the smile does not.  three images…

wingman

a seedling in line.  this one already has its own place in the garden.  no doubt the place is too crowded.  going to have to talk to the gardener about his planting scheme.  between him and the hybridizer i am surprised that there are not sardines squeezed in here somewhere.  now back to the seedling.  it is strong and tall plant about 48 inches 121.9 cm tall and has about a 6 inch 15.2 cm flower.  maybe even a bit bigger than that.  i don’t think this one will get pushed out.  it may get crossed with the competition, i like it that much.  two images…

bud building

this is a seedling that has been blooming for several weeks.   it is a cross of Talon x Wind Frills) x Birdwing Butterfly.  the bloom is in the 8 inch range.  and if you look closely behind today’s bloom you will see not just one, yet another bloom forming.  if you look closely at the base of the bud there is just the beginning of another new bud.  when a plant continues to add new buds – that is referred to as bud building.  if the temperature and weather remain favorable some plants will continue to add buds for several more weeks.  four images

a little start

there are many patterned daylilies.  so why should i so to speak start over ?  the simple answer is there are not many diploid spidery patterned daylilies.  or perhaps i am just silly or stubborn.  so the first cross was Cerulean Star x Sings the Blues.  that seedling was in turn crossed with Katie’s Blues, the seedling pictured here.  now that seedling might be crossed with this seedling 12-0619-004 black plush x trahlyta) x Wind Frills.  that is if they will cross at all.  this one’s small pattern  appeared on its own.  nothing to speak of in the history of the three parents showed a pattern.  so back to that little start.  perhaps we shall follow it and see where it leads.  three images

Trahlyta take 38

is this really take 38 ?  well it is earlier than take 45.  or i am mostly convinced it is.  this is Trahlyta seedling that has a similar open form as last night’s seedling.  it is another one that will be watched this coming season.  this is a seedling with some frequently seen things and at least one seldom seen trait.  seldom seen in this line of seedlings.  the seedling has a nice open star form with some pinching.  it also has the hint of a grey eye zone.  this can be seen somewhat better in the detail.  will this grey eye zone ever turn in to something more significant and visible ?  perhaps.  it may take a few more crosses.  and that is how new episodes of this game start.   a hint of new things and some experimentation.  let the experimentation begin…      12-0619-004 black plush x trahlyta) x Wind Frills

other possibilities

unless i get distracted the next couple of days will most likely be seedlings from Trahlyta, Starman’s Quest, and Smoke Scream.  and we can watch the genes take off in their own directions.  now there are quite a few purples in that bunch of children.  and there are some other colors too.  so let’s try a bit of variety.  this is a child from Trahlyta.  and while it is not a precise measure the scale of the flower next to my hand, my inclination is the flower is pushing the 7 inch range.  bigger than any of its parents.  Trahlyta x Black Plush) x Wind Frills.  and it comes in another color besides purple.

doing math in the garden

what goes into choosing a flower ?  the questions range from ‘how pretty is it,’ to ‘what is the baggage that comes along with pretty,’ to ‘how much pretty is it ?’  there can be more yet this is enough for tonight.  some flowers are stunningly pretty to the point that any other questions are just blown away.  some flowers have good baggage and others have not so good baggage that can tilt the considerations one way or the other.  or pull in opposite directions.  this flower may have a little of that two direction pull.  it just came out of the seedling bed, a place where there is a bit too much shade and all of the plants reach and lean towards the sun.  and this one may have a reason to lean.  it has a bloom count not often expected on a first year bloom, about 45 buds.  to put it in a few words – lots of potential and some watching and waiting to see how it plays out.  so enough words, pictures already.

a seedling

This is one of several Talon x Wind Frills seedlings that I am observing and hope to select.  I will start with the two parents and then the seedling.   I very much like the combination of these two.

who is this here ?

I don’t know if some plants are running late this year or what ?  This season has me confused.  Some have not been this late before.  Then again some are seedlings and it takes them time to make up their minds.  Hmm – sit back and watch the extended show, that works !

Oh the seedling is Talon X Wind Frills.  Third or fourth year of bloom.
